Travis Rhodes Will Coach
Football at Sands Springs
Travis Rhodes, football coach and athletic director of Blackwell high school since 1952 and Tonkawa grid coach for 1951-1956, will become head grid coach at Sands Springs Charles Page high school next fall.
T. E. Pafford of Sands Springs board of education announced Wednesday that Rhodes was the board’s unanimous choice to succeed Charles Prigmore who resigned earlier this year.
Rhodes, a veteran of 15 years of coaching has taken three teams to the finals in Oklahoma’s football playoffs. His 1959 Blackwell team lost to Ada in the state Class A finals. His 1952 and ’53 Tonkawa teams took state Class B titles.
Rhodes attended Louisiana State university and completed work for his bachelor’s degree at Southwestern Oklahoma State college, Weatherford. He has received a master’s degree in education from Oklahoma State university, and has done graduate work at Texas Christian university.
The newly-hired Sandite mentor began coaching at Hinton high school, where he handled football, basketball and baseball for four seasons.
He coached Watonga high school’s football, basketball and track teams for the 1950-51 school year, then spent six years at Tonkawa, coaching the same three sports.
He was appointed grid coach and athletic director at Blackwell in 1957.
Has 30-11 Record
In four seasons his Maroon grid teams won 30 games, lost 11 and tied one. Blackwell won the district 4A (Interstate 35 Conference) title in 1959. Last year the Maroons finished in a three-way tie for the district crown but Edmond won the playoff berth on a coin flip.
Rhodes is married and has two daughters now attending Blackwell high school. His wife, now teaching sophomore English at the school, will teach the same subject in the Sand Springs system.
