Local Guard Unit Is Commended for Annual Inspection
A favorable report was made Thursday evening by Lt. Col. James R. Reed, Jr., who performed the annual I.G. inspection of the local National Guard unit.
“I am very well pleased with the unit and always enjoy making an inspection where the unit is so well prepared for it,” Col. Reed said.
Attending the inspection were 67 townspeople and many officers of the 45th division artillery; Col. Robert C. Dunnington, executive officer of division artillery; Lt. Col. Clee Fitzgerald, assistant ASFC; Maj. Lawrence Youell, commanding officer of the Second Howitzer battalion; Maj. Carl R. Junghanns, assistant S-3 of division artillery; Maj. R. B. Koos, regular army advisor; Maj. Clyde Sodowsky, battalion executive officer; Capt. Gordon A. Brown, battalion S-3; Capt. Harold R. Waugh, communication officer; Lt. J. W. Casper, regimental S-4, CWO Ira L. McHenry, battalion personnel officer; and W. O. Dwight Jeeter, battalion supply officer.
In his critique, Lt. Col. Reed indicated that the Tonkawa battery would receive the same rating as it did in 1960, that of Superior, highest rank given.
Mrs. Lorene Miller Talks On Landscape
Painting at Beta Sigma Phi Meeting
Mrs. Lorene Miller, a guest, presented the program for members of Gamma Nu chapter, Beta Sigma Phi, when they met Monday evening in the home of Mrs. Tedrowe Coulter.
Mrs. Miller displayed scenes painted by herself to illustrate the program entitled “The Artist’s Landscape.” Points to be considered in painting, she said, are balance, arrangement of subject, rhythm, object for center, variation of colors and unity. She was introduced by Mrs. McDaniel Wall.
Mrs. Arlene Mills presided at the business meeting when the club voted contributions to the Camp Fire and Heart funds.
Attending were Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Everett Mugg, Mrs. Jim Noonan, Mrs. Wes Wood, Mrs. Leonard Moses, Mrs. Gene Salisbury, Mrs. Ernest Melichar, Mrs. Wall, Mrs. William Strange, Mrs. Mills, Mrs. Albert Wetmore, Mrs. Charles Schnorr, Mrs. George Taylor, Mrs. Warren L. Wood, and Mrs. Coulter.

Mark Schatz Signs With Wichita State
Mark Schatz, Tonkawa Buccaneer All-State lineman signed a letter of intent and scholarship agreement with Wichita State university on February 10. It was learned here. Schatz, recipient of the Chris M. Lucas award, said the scholarship was for one year and will be renewed each year that he plays at Wichita. It includes room, board, tuition, books, fees and $15 a month.
