The Northern Oklahoma College Mavs and Lady Mavs hosted Labette (KS) Monday night at Foster-Piper Fieldhouse.
The 10th ranked Mavs (5-0) were 83-48 winners while the Lady Mavs (0-4) lost 66-63.
Mavs 83, Labette 48
Dylan McLean led four double figure scorers in an 83-48 rout of Labette (KS) Monday night.
Tyrel Morgan led the Mavs with five rebounds and JD Ray had nine assists. Nate Goodlow had five steals for NOC.
“Last night was a great team effort,” said coach Donnie Jackson. “We challenged the guys to prepare for the game like it was a conference game. Since we started off with a first game bye while other teams in our league were playing, I thought we needed to challenge them to lock in for longer periods of time, reduce some of the mistakes we need to clean up and make the extra pass to open teammates, which we did.”
“Mark (Berry) really brought a lot of defensive energy to our team and he is thriving in that role. I thought it carried over to his other teammates.”
NOC led Monday’s game throughout jumping out to a 36-21 halftime lead and built that edge through the second half.
The Mavs open conference play Thursday night at NEO.
“Now we are 0-0. The non-conference portion is over and every game is Region play,” Jackson said. “NEO was picked as the favorite to win our league, and rightfully so. We will need to be tough mentally and physically if we want a chance to win a region game on the road.”
Labette 66. Lady Mavs 63
The NOC Lady Mavs rallied from a double figure fourth quarter deficit but fell just short to Labette 66-63.
Delaney Reimer led four double figure scorers with 15 while Lauren Coates added 12 off the Lady Mavs bench. Radina Zhivachka and Mia Brown had 11 each. Coates had seven rebounds while Mia Brown had six steals.
“We continued to improve,” said coach Greg Krause. “We showed some depth and had a few players begin to bust out a little bit. I think playing non-conference against two excellent teams has prepared us well for conference play.”
The Lady Mavs face NEO Thursday night in the conference opener.
