Jean Buhrman Is Homemaker
Award Winner for 1961
Miss Jean Buhrman, daughter of Mrs. Dave Buhrman and a senior at Tonkawa high school, has been named 1961 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow of her school.
Having received the highest score in a written examination on homemaking knowledge and attitudes taken by graduating seniors in her school, she becomes a candidate for the state Homemaker of Tomorrow award which will be announced in March.
Each school Homemaker of Tomorrow award will receive an award pin, manufactured by Jostens and representing slogan, “Home Is Where the Heart Is.” The examination papers of school Homemakers of Tomorrow will be entered in competition to name the state’s Homemaker of Tomorrow.
The $110,000 homemaking education program sponsored by General Mills offers a $1,500 scholarship to the first ranking girl in each state and $500 scholarship in the state’s second ranking participant.
State Homemakers of Tomorrow and their faculty advisors receive an expense-paid educational tour to York City, Colonial Williamsburg, Va. And Washington, D. C. April 8-13, trip culminating in the announcement of the All-American Homemaker of Tomorrow whose scholarship is increased to $5,000. Second, third and fourth ranking Homemakers Of Tomorrow in the Nation will have their scholarships raised to $4,000, $3,000 and $2,000, respectively.
Bill Houston Is Named Manager at Anthony’s
Bill Houston, 29, of Blackwell, was named manager of the C. R. Anthony store Monday, replacing Walter Knight who resigned from the company to enter business here, it was announced today by the company.
Houston, 29, has been assistant manager of the company’s store at Blackwell and has been with the firm for the past five years. Houston and his wife, Joelene, have one daughter a month old and are both graduates of Blackwell high school. Houston is a 1957 graduate of Northern Oklahoma Junior college.
The Houstons are members of the Baptist church and hope to move to Tonkawa by the first of February if suitable housing can be found.
Knight has been manager of the local Anthony store for the past four and a half years, coming here from the Capitol Hill store in Oklahoma City. Knight resigned from the company to take over ownership and management of Pardew’s Variety store.
