Oba would score on the opening kickoff of the ball game at Tonkawa Friday night and never score again. The result: Tonkawa 26, OBA 7.
Tonkawa’s defense screwed down the hatches -- allowing the Trojans a net 22 yards rushing the remainder of the ball game -- sacking their quarterback/running back 11 times.
Meanwhile, Tonkawa’s offense took off running with senior tailback Tristan Burdick rushing for 305 yards on 25 carries and scoring on runs of 56 and 77 yards.
The Trojans would only penetrate Tonkawa’s scoring zone two more times during the evening only to be turned away by hard-charging Buc defenders.
The first came early in the game after OBA forced Tonkawa to punt on its first possession of the ball game. The Trojans drove from their own 32 to the Buc three and had first and goal at the eight. On fourth down, Jaidyn Guzman sacked the OBA signal-caller for an 11 yard loss.
A dead ball penalty set the Bucs up at their own 7 yard line. Ryan Morgan scored from one yard out on an eight play, 93 yard drive. Big plays included a 34 yard run by Burdick and a 31 yard pass from Morgan to Noah Campbell.
Still trailing 6-7, Tonkawa mounted another drive late in the second quarter going from their own 27 to score on a 36 yard pass from Morgan to Campbell with just nine ticks left before halftime. The 73 yard drive in 8 plays included runs by Burdick of 22 and 21 yards.
The halftime buzzer sounded as Jake Randall intercepted an OBA pass on their first play after the kickoff. The Bucs led 12-7 at halftime.
On the first play of the second half, Burdick ran 56 yards to score followed by a Jake Randall two point conversion run to put Tonkawa up 20-7. It came after Campbell had returned the opening kickoff 20 yards.
On OBA’s third offensive play of the second half, Burdick tackled a receiver for zero gain, swiping the ball out of his hand and Clay Massey was there to cover for the Bucs.
After trading punts in the third quarter, OBA managed to get a first down at the Buc 18. That’s when Ryan Morgan intercepted at the Tonkawa four and returned it to the 27. On first down, Burdick ran 77 yards for the touchdown, giving the Bucs their final margin of victory, 26-7.
