Win Top Scholastic Awards at Northern
Awarded Alumni Scholastic awards for the top scholastic man and woman in the 1960 graduating class of Northern Oklahoma Junior college were Mary Ruth Scott, Tonkawa, and Alfred Zavodny, Perry. The presentation was made in the annual awards assembly, May 20, by Dr. V. R. Easterling, president. Other awards and recipients were: DAR American History

Engineering Scholarship award, Victor NIcholson, Blackwell; Mathematics award, Howard Johnston, Hominy; Chemistry award, Paul Haxed, Ponca City; Maverick awards, Lana Harman and Jean Dablem; and the Round-up Award, Dorma Currier, Deer Creek.
Recognized for participation in music were the girls trio composed of Carolyn Harris, Blackwell, Sarah Fix and Leah Beth Taylor, Tonkawa; Trumpeteers, Alfred Zavodny, Perry, Larry Porter, Blackwell, and Kenny Anderson, Ponca City, two guitarists, Dick See, Garber, and Fred Carr, Tonkawa; and soloist Elaine Hoover, Blackwell.
Hundreds Greet Admiral Burke at Tonkawa Visit Thursday Evening
Naval heroes of today and yesterday were guests of honor in Tonkawa Thursday evening when Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, Chief of Naval Operations, and four crew members from the USS Oklahoma when it was bombed in Pearl Harbor were greeted by hundreds of Oklahomans. After attending a luncheon in Oklahoma City and speaking at the dedication of a memorial erected by the Navy League of Oklahoma, Admiral and Mrs. Burke and their official party arrived at Ponca City’s municipal airport at approximately 3:20 p.m.
From that time until their departure about 11 p.m., the party attended a press conference in Ponca City, a reception at Ponca City’s country club, a drill routine by the Mavettes of NOJC, an informal dinner in Northern’s memorial union, commencement exercises in Wilkin auditorium, and a public reception at the union.
Baptist Friendship Class Entertains
Dorcos Class At Tuesday Luncheon Meet
The Friendship class of the Baptist church entertained the Dorcas class at a one o’clock luncheon Tuesday at the home of Mrs. W. A. Smith.
Small floral arrangements centered the quartet tables, and Mrs. J. N. Starr led in prayer. Mrs. Lula Murry, class president, presided and Mrs. G. P. Zwink gave devotions on the Holy Land.
The June meeting will be with Mrs. Edith Savage, north of the city, it was announced.
