Tonkawa hosts Perry at Buc Stadium Friday, sept. 11.
Kick off is at 7 p.m.
Football Senior night will be this Friday, September 11th at 6:30 p.m. before the game to recognize senior football players, managers, band members, and cheerleaders.
“The Maroons are gonna be well schooled after losses to top teams in Class A the first two weeks of the season,” Buc Head Coach Mike Kirtley said this week.
While the Bucs beat up on Newkirk 49-14 Thursday, Perry fell to Class A second ranked Cashion 49-13 last Friday. In their season opener, the Maroons lost to third ranked Pawhuska 64-7. “Perry is well coached,” Kirtley said, “They throw and catch the ball well and are really good defensively, especially against the run. That’s what’s going to make it tough on us.”
Perry will be in a spread offense and a 4-3 defense. “We just need to continue to be injury and sickness free,” Kirtley said. Tonkawa has already lost three players for the season -- Kai Day (back), Luke Shepherd (knee) and Tuff Crosby (ankle). “The good news is that Nathan Anderson appears to be all right and played well against Newkirk last week,” the veteran Buc head coach said.
“It was nice to see the kids could still get excited after facing so much adversity in the pre-season,” Kirtley said. “And they were excited for each other’s accomplishments on the field. That impressed me. They not only played with enthuasiasm but showed it when someone else did something good. That excites me and the rest of the staff about this team.”
On last week’s Newkirk game, Kirtley said, “Any time you have 290 yards rushing, you gotta be happy with blocking and running. We still got work to do on turnovers, penalties and the like, but I was pretty happy with the absence of big mistakes for the most part. We were much improved from the pre-season scrimmage vs. OK Union in August.”
