Tonkawa Buc footballers took to the field for the first time last Friday, Aug. 21, in a pre-season scrimmage vs. OK Union. “We still have lots of work to do before we open the season,” Head Coach Mike Kirtley said.
“We still have lots of work to do before we open the season,” Head Coach Mike Kirtley said. Early in the scrimmage, the winds were taken out of the sails when junior running back/linebacker Kai Day went down with a back injury. He was taken by ambulance to Blackwell Regional Hospital and eventually taken to Wichita and is now back home recuperating with a back brace the next six to eight weeks.
“I’m glad he’s going to be OK,” kirtley said. “It’s always tough to lose a fierce competitor like Kai,” he ended.
A total of 29 prospects have been practicing since Aug. 10. A 30th player showed up Monday with freshman Justin Mitchell, a 5-10, 200 pound lineman prospect.
Tonkawa opens the 2020 season at Newkirk 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3.
