American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is a non partisan program that teaches young women responsible citizenship and love for God and country. Started in 1937, nearly a million young women nationwide have had the opportunity to learn how their state and local government works. The program has grown to almost 20,000 annually.
High school girls who have completed their junior year spend an intensive week of working together as self-governing citizens. These young women learn about the government by actually creating a mythical state through the election of officials at the local, county and state levels and then carrying out the duties of these respective offices.
The Tonkawa American Legion Auxiliary Unit sponsors these Girls State delegates with the Tonkawa American Legion Post sponsoring the delegates financially. Evelyn Coyle is the Girls State chairman.
