In honor of Native American History Month this November, the Marland Grand Home will present a Listen and Learn series presentation entitled “We Rock, Tolls and Trade of the American Indian”. The presentation will take place on Saturday, November 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Guest speaker and local attorney, Gary Bracken, has expertise in tribal artifacts and is a collector himself. Bracken will speak to the anthropology of man, his history and time-line through the ages. In order to survive man had to adapt and invent. Bracken will share his knowledge of man’s progression, survival skills and tools. The Marland Grand Home has an impressive collection of tribal arrow and spear points, tools and some jewelry, with some dating back thousands of years.
Immediately following the presentation, Neil Garrison, a flint knapping artesian will recreate the ancient art, using native stone to make tool points and arrowheads. Garrison uses a tool kit that resembles one used by ancient people. His hammers are fashioned out of deer antlers and his abrader is made of sandstone. His stone of choice is Kay County flint, which is prevalent throughout the Flint Hills region of north central Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas.
Guests can also try their hand at grinding corn to make meal on an ancient mano and metate and can string beads to make a bracelet in a similar manner to that of Native tribes. Complimentary refreshments will be hosted by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and will coincide with the craft time. There is no charge for attendance. Seating is limited. For reservations, please call the Marland Grand Home at 580-767-0427.
