Tonkawa took a 7-6 lead midway through the first quarter over Pawhuska.
It soon disappeared.
The Huskies, behind the arm of Bryce Drummond and the running and receiving of Easton Kirk and Mason Gilkey, proceeded to score seven unanswered touchdowns to hand the Bucs a 48-7 defeat.
The loss, Tonkawa’s second in a row in District A-5, came before a huge home crowd.
“I think it had as much or more to do with us than them,” Head Coach Mike Kirtley said. “We started at ground zero this year and the last two games have shown us a bunch of glaring weaknesses on our part we’ll have to work on if we’re to get to the playoffs again this year.”
Tonkawa’s only trip to the redzone came on a 58 yard drive in seven plays. The touchdown came on a 9 yard pass from Tristan Burdick to Kai Day with 6:26 left in the first quarter. Peyton Day sparked the drive with a 31 yard kickoff return after the Huskies had taken the opening kickoff and scored on the sixth play of a 68 yard drive for a 6-0 lead. Peyton raced 41 yards with a Burdick pass to set up the scoring opportunity.
The Bucs got to the Huskie 25 two times, once before half and again as the game ended. Other drives during the game ended at the Tonkawa 19, 28, 40, 42, 39, 43, 23 and 46.
One of the redeeming successes of the evening: Pawhuska scored eight touchdowns and didn’t convert one two point conversion. Parker Miller intercepted one.
In a comparison of lineups, the Huskies had seven new upperclassmen that weren’t on last year’s roster.
Burdick was 7-14 passing for 82 yards and also led the rushing with 81 yards on 29 carries.
Parker Miller led the defense with eight tackles. Carson Robinson and Peyton Day each had seven.
Carson Robinson, Peyton Day, Nathan Anderson and Kai Day were all in on tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Joby Jauregui led in pass hurries with four.
Pawhuska is now 4-0 in the league and 6-0 overall. The Bucs drop to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in league play.
