Pioneer Technology Center Health students, both high school and adults, recently attended and competed at the HOSA (Health Occupations Student Association) Spring Leadership Conference held in Norman April 8 - 10, 2019. It was the largest HOSA conference to date with over 3,000 participants. This was the state level portion; 1st place winners will proceed to the international conference to be held June 19 - 22 in Orlando, Florida.
Pioneer Tech has been very active in HOSA through the years; all three HOSA chapters at PTC were recognized as Gold Star chapters for their collaboration with the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, also Brenda Bennett, Health Careers Certification instructor, received the Outstanding HOSA Advisor award.
From the adult Medical Assisting program, two students secured first place awards: Mariah Waters (Fairfax) in Health Career Photography and Michelle Neal (Ponca City) in Home Health Aide. Makayla Deidrich (Veterinary Science) post-secondary and Merilynn Bajo (Pharmacy Science), both of Ponca City and HCC2 students also took 1st place in their events. A team from HCC1, Kiley Sheets (Newkirk) and Sara Osborn (Ponca City) won 2nd place in the Health Education competition for their Stop the Bleed project. These young ladies are developing a CPRlike program for the public to handle emergency bleeding situations. Another team in Medical Innovations, Brandi Lindley and Faith Neiman, both of Ponca City scored fourth place. Other participants were: team Hannah Golay (Ponca City) and Cassie Muniz (Blackwell) for Forensic Science and Abigail Marsh (Fairfax) for Sports Medicine from the Biomedical Academy program; Ponca City team Tayla CallsHim and Lizbet Chavez (Health Care Display), Destiny Sims from Ponca City (Home Health Aide), Reed Alexander from Tonkawa (Veterinary Science), Miranda Lindsey from Ponca City(Veterinary Science) from the HCC2 class; team Kaitlyn Convers from Blackwell and Chloe Howard from Tonkawa (Health Education), Laynee Johnstone from Ponca City (Veterinary Science) and team Courtney Parks and Gabrielle Ramirez, both of Ponca City (Health Career Display) from the HCC1 class. Hilary Bible from Ponca City (Medical Terminology) and Cali Margerum from Blackwell (Job Seeking Skills) competed from the Medical Assisting class.
