Heart in the Park invites everyone to attend the annual Community Earth Day Walk on the labyrinth in Centennial Park, located at Grand Avenue and Sixth Street.
The Earth Day Walk is set for approximately 5 p.m. Monday, April 22, immediately following the Chamber of Commerce presentation to the national champion NOC Tonkawa Cheer Team, recent winner of the Small Two-Year College Coed title at the USA Collegiate Championship Competition in Anaheim, Calif. In honor of Earth Day, walkers will receive green ribbons to tie on the heart frame at the labyrinth exit as they complete their walk. Green ribbons signify the individual’s interest in protecting the earth’s environment. Based on a concept of environmental activities John McConnell in 1969, Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelsons as an environmental teach-in held April 22, 1970. Today, annual Earth Day events are held in more than 193 countries around the world to promote environmental awareness and to encourage people to “Go Green” by conserving natural resources and reducing their carbon footprint.
