Preservation Oklahoma organization promotes historic landmarks across the state.
The photo of the Tonkawa Bathhouse in Ray See Park is featured on the front page of their April, 2019, newspaper. The bathhouse and the swimming pool were constructed in the late 1930’s as a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project. Even though the pool is no longer operable, the bathhouse is in good condition. Hopefully, a worthy use will be found for the bathhouse.
The WPA was founded in 1935 and provided work for many unemployed men. The 1930’s were difficult years for Oklahomans.
Tonkawa’s Public Library was also constructed by the WPA. This library is an integral part of the life of the community.
Preservation Oklahoma creates awareness to the importance of protecting our state’s historic structures. Tonkawa is honored to be recognized for our Bathhouse landmark.
