Council Race Hangs Fire; No Candidates
Tonkawa’s city election was still hanging fire today and by press-time Thursday afternoon still no candidates had filed for council positions.
Deadline for filing is 5 p.m. Saturday when filing forms must be in the office of I. D. Ross, Newkirk, secretary of the county election board. Ross said no filings had been received in his office as yet.
Five council positions are up for election April 6. One councilman is to be elected from each of the four city wards and one at large.
Councilmen from the four wards must be residents of the ward which they represent. The councilman-at-large can be a resident of any of the four city wards.
Evans Rehired School Chief
Andy Evans was re-elected as superintendent of Tonkawa public schools for the 1954-55 term when members of the school board met Monday night at the high school.
Next year will be Evans’ fourth as head of the Tonkawa schools.
The board also made plans for the annual school election, to be held March 23, according to Murray Scott, school board president. Two propositions will be on the ballot, a 15 mill general fund proposition and a five-mill building fund levy.
There will be only one balloting place, City hall. Any qualified voter in Tonkawa may vote and need not re-register under the new re-registration law to do so, Scott said. Balloting will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
