THS Art is kicking off a fundraiser for the next three weeks to raise money for veteran grave markers at the Tonkawa IOOF Cemetery. Students will place donation boxes at the following locations Chamber of Commerce, First National Bank, Gateway Bank, Jim’s Barber Shop, Quiddy’s, Hammerheads, Mary’s Tonkawa Grill, Jiffy Trip, and Moore’s Venture Food. Anyone wishing to mail a donation please send to Tonkawa High School 500 East North Ave. 74653 to the attention of Dawn Huff. If you have questions, you can call Mrs. Huff at the high school 580-628-2566 ext. 1.This project is a group effort; instructor Jared McMartin, of the precision machining program at Pioneer Technology Center has written a program and produced a prototype marker to match the ones currently installed. His students will produce the markers once Tonkawa High School students raise the money for the aluminum needed. Once the markers are completed, American Legion and IOOF volunteers will install them. Currently, the supply made for the cemetery many years ago by Bill Stowers of the B & L Foundry has been exhausted, leaving a few of the nearly 600 veteran graves without markers. It is our hope to raise enough money to produce a surplus of markers to install and honor our veterans now and in the future.
