Every year, the Oklahoma Council for Teachers of English holds a Young Writers Contest. Students are allowed to enter the contest choosing a genre in which they would like to write. Genres include: expository, poetry, short story, descriptive paragraph, or personal narrative. Once the students choose the genre(s) that interest them, the topics and subject matter are endless! This year Addyson Harmon, an 8th grader at Tonkawa Middle School entered the Young Writers Contest submitting a personal narrative titled: “Bull-Headed”. Her entry won! As a way to celebrate her as a young writer as well as all of the other award winners from around Oklahoma she got to attend an awards ceremony where she was presented with a certificate, her personal narrative was included in an anthology, and she was given the opportunity to read an excerpt of writing to fellow writers, teachers, and OKCTE members.
