The McCarter Museum of Tonkawa is in need of a replacement of the roof on the aged building housing the museum in downtown Tonkawa. The Tonkawa Historical Society purchased the downtown building to house a museum in 1997 with the support from a generous seed gift given by the sons of longtime Tonkawans Bertha and Louis McCarter -- Ted, Louis Jr. and Steve and their families. The museum opened on July 4th of that year.Today, the building’s roof is beyond patching repair and in desperate need of replacement. The McCarter Museum is one of Oklahoma’s best community museums and a source of pride for Tonkawa. It is uniquely designed in a way to “tell a series of stories” about Tonkawa’s history, including a gallery of photos of early-day Tonkawa -- a school room, a Nez Pierce and Tonkawa tribal section, a presentation of Three Sands Oil Field memorabilia, a farm room, a World War II Prisoner of War Camp exhibit, a military room, medical display and a Cherokee Strip corner. The McCarter Museum is a valued source of historical education in Tonkawa. The free museum is directed by devoted members of the Board of Directors and nurtured by many caring volunteers. An estimated $50,000 plus is needed to replace the building’s roof.Send donations to:Tonkawa Historical SocietyP.O.
