The Board of Education of Tonkawa Public Schools has announced that statutorily qualified individuals interested in running as a candidate for the #3 seat on the Tonkawa Board can file to run as a candidate for this seat at the Kay County Election Board in Newkirk from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, through Wednesday, Dec. 7.That seat is currently held by Nancy Appleman. The primary election will be held on Feb. 14, 2023. The general election will be April 4, 2023. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.The term of office for this seat will run from 2023 until 2028. The filing period for Board of Education Candidates will open at 8:00 a.m. Monday, December 5, 2022 and closes at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 or when the Kay County Election Board Office closes for business that day. All filings must be made at Kay County Election Board in Newkirk. Any contest of candidacy petitions, or withdrawal of candidate, must be filed by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 9, 2022.The Board of Education Primary Election shall be held on February 7, 2023, only if three or more candidates file for the Board of Education position scheduled to be on the ballot or for a Board of Education position appearing on the ballot as an unexpired term. A Board of Education General Election shall be held on April 5, 2023, under the following circumstances: if only two candidates file for a position scheduled to be on the ballot or for a position on the ballot for an unexpired term or if no candidate in the Board of Education Primary Election receives more than 50% of the votes cast. The polling places shall be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.If only one (1) candidate files for a Board of Education office, that candidate is deemed to be elected and no election is held. If only two (2) candidates file for an office, they appear on the ballot at the Board of Education General Election held in April, and no Primary Election will be held in February.
