Carleona Hockert, a high school sophomore, made Tonkawa Public School History by being the first female to wrestle in a regional wrestling tournament. The girl’s division tournament was held on February 14-15 at Jay High School in Jay, Oklahoma.Carleona earned a third place medal which qualifies her for the Oklahoma State Wrestling Tournament to be held at the State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City on February 25-26. Again, history will be made.Carleona began her wrestling career in the boy’s division because a girl’s division had not been established. She was just eight years old when she first took to the mat.“My inspiration is my brother, Cameron, a former Buc wrestler. I come from a wrestling family who truly loves the sport. Wrestling is what we do,” she says. When asked, “What does it feel like to make Lady Buc history as the first female wrestler?” She replied, “ I’m glad I get to be the one who brings it home. It is really an honor.”On Friday night, you can bet her whole family will be in the stands at The Big House. Included in the cheering section will be her parents Brett and Keitha Hockert and her siblings Kerinity, Cameron, Brianna, Phoebe, and JR. Lets join her family at 5:00 pm at the fairgrounds to cheer on all of our Buccaneer State Qualifiers! All of the state tournament brackets for Tonkawa wrestlers can be found on page 10.
