60 years ago, June 29, 1961Tonkawans’ Son FlysWith Famous USAF SkyblazersFirst Lieutenant Gary D. Barnhill, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Barnhill, 209 N. Tenth, has been selected as a pilot with the famous Skyblazer Aerial Demonstration team in Europe.The Skyblazers are the European counterparts of the famous USAF Thunderbirds and have performed for more than 10 million people in Europe, Scandinavia, Great Britain, North Africa and the Near East.Included among their audiences have been most of European royalty, heads of state and military leaders from nearly every country in Europe.The Skyblazers are flying goodwill ambassadors for the Air Force and the United States as they thrill thousands with their precision maneuvers performed at speeds of up to 750 miles per hour with their wing tips a scant three feet apart.General Laurts Norstad, Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, has described the Skyblazer team as “one of the outstanding contributions to our NATO efforts.”Lt. Barnhill has been stationed as an F-100 pilot at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, for the past three years.He visited in Tonkawa in May with his parents and his sister, Mrs. Al Fuhr, 401 N. Eleventh, before returning to Germany for another two-year tour of duty.Market Activity Gains Momentum Following HarvestStock cattle prices topped at $23.40 this week as more normal activity resumed on the livestock market with the ending of harvest.According to figures from Tonkawa Sales company’s weekly auction Monday, cow prices ranged from $15 to $15.70 per hundredweight and fat calves were high at $23.60. Fat hog prices topped at $17.50.Consigners of fat calves were: J. W. Johnson, Blackwell, black heifer, 675 lbs., $22; and Charlie Young, Red Rock, 23 whiteface heifers and steers, $21.50 to $23.60 for a heifer weighing 55 lbs.Stock cattle consignments were as follows: M. R. Barton, Ponca City, black steer, 585 lbs., $22.90; Carl Frailey, Billings, whiteface steer, 540 lbs., $23.40; Fred Gallatin, Ralston, bald faced bull, 335 lbs., $23.10; Frank Hickl, Billings, whiteface steer, 655 lbs., $22; and Dan McFarlin, Ponca City, whiteface steer, 660 lbs., $21.Consignors of cows, with weights and prices were as follows: B.
