60 years ago, June 8, 1961Director Outlines Summer Rec Plan For Kiwanis ClubJack Hudack, director of the summer recreation program, outlined the schedule of youth activities Wednesday when he spoke at a meeting of the Kiwanis club held at Tonkawa Grill. The speaker told Kiwanians that to date he had very few boys interested in the weight lifting or tennis programs, but that enrollment in baseball was now above the 60 mark.Hudack said the weight lifting program was designed especially for boys from the sixth grade up through high school and would be held between 3-4 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the armory.“We aren’t attempting to build these boys into muscle-bound giants, but are seeking to help them develop all the muscles of their body. It is doubtful that any boy will ever lift more than 40 pounds under the training,” Hudack explained. He said that smaller boys would actually benefit more from the program than would larger and more muscular boys.Tennis instruction is scheduled from 4-5 p.m., Monday through Fridays, and is given at the courts at Northern Junior college. Youngsters from the third grade up are needed to round out the program.Hudack said that baseball practice sessions were held from 1-3 p.m. daily with games to be played in the evenings.
