Boys State Delegates Are Named by American Legion
Delegates to 1961 Boys State from the junior class of Tonkawa High school were named this week by a committee of the American Legion. The boys will join more than 600 others from all parts of the state for a study of government at Norman during the week of June 3-16.
Delegates sponsored by Joe Hubbell, commander of the local American Legion post were: Don Combrink, Kenneth Cathey and John Strome. Alternates selected by the committee were: Danny Burns, john Hough and Jim Legg.
Boys State is under the general sponsorship of the State Department of the American Legion. Local delegates are sponsored by the Kiwanis club, the Lions club and the local American Legion post.
Don Combrink, delegate sponsored by the Lions club, is president of the Youth Fellowship of the First Baptist church where he is a member. He is also a member of the church choir, and a cosponsor of Royal Ambassadors.
In school, Combrink, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Combrink, is a member of the mixed chorus and the modern choir. He is a past representative on the student council.
Kenneth Cathey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Cathey, is sponsored to Boys State by the Tonkawa Kiwanis club.
He was president of his sophomore class, secretary of his freshman class and is a past representative on the student council. He is a recent recipient of the American Legion citizenship award.
Cathey was active in football, basketball and track in junior high and was captain of the junior high football team. He is a member of the mixed chorus and participates in scholastic contests. He is a member of the First Baptist church.
John Strome, delegate sponsored by the American Legion post, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Strome, 135 E. North avenue.
The delegate has been a member of the Tonkawa high school band for the past three years. He is a member of the First Christian church.
Washington PTA Receives Awards For Membership
Third grade pupils under the direction of Mrs. Mildred Humphries, teacher, presented the program at the April meeting of the Washington Parent-Teacher association held Monday afternoon at the school.
Presented were two choral readings entitled “Washing,” and “War on Litterbugs,” two singing games, “Yankee Doodle,” and “The Shoemaker’s Dance,” and the singing “Oklahoma.”
