Betty Scott Selected for Russian Tour
A Tonkawa athlete paced her college basketball team to the National Women’s AA13 championship at St. Joseph, Mo. Saturday night and played herself to a berth on the American team to tour Russia in late April.
Betty Scott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Scott, scored 12 points as Wayland college of Plainview, Tex. downed Nashville Business college 39-29 in the tourney finals. She tied team mate Laura Switzer for scoring honors and led the Flying Queens in rebounding.
For the Russian tour, Betty is one of 12 girls selected for the eight-game schedule with two games scheduled each in Moscow, Live, Tbilisi and Leningrad. Coach for the American team is Harley J. Reddin, Wayland mentor.
Selected for the American team from Wayland’s Flying Queens were Scott, Switzer, Carla Lowry; Cindy Shelton, Gay Levy, Glenna Masten and Nelda Smith. Others on the team are Joan Crawford and Jill Upton of Nashville Business college; Sandra Fiete, Platt College of St. Joseph; Judy Hodson, Iowa Wesleyan; and Rita Horky, Topeka Boosters.
The girls will assemble in New York on Saturday, Apr. 15 and will leave for Russia on April 19 – Betty’s 20th birthday. In their short stay in New York, they will be fitted for uniforms, receive passports and get in a few practice sessions. Officials indicated the girls might make some television appearances.
The American team will have to make some adjustments in the style of play in order to meet Russian rules. AAU rules used in the United States provide that two girls of each team play forward, two play guard and two play rover, Miss Scott’s position. Rovers play all over the court.
Russian basketball rules closely resemble boys rules in that all positions are played all over the court with no one restrained.
