Tonkawa and Marland Girls State Delegates
Jill Harris and Mary Lou Mills, Tonkawa, and Arleta Evans, Marland, were today named delegates to 1961 Girls State to be held on the OCW campus at Chickasha, June 3-10.
Tonkawa alternates are Janet Gearheard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Gearheard, and Marilyn Heady, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eber K. Heady. First alternate at Marland is Patsy McAlister, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McAlister, and second alternate is Norma Lee Sanders, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sanders.
The selections were announced this week by Mrs. A. D. Buck, Auxiliary president, and Mrs. L. A. Robinson, Auxiliary Girls State chairman.
Miss Harris and Miss Gearheard are sponsored to the event by the Tonkawa Junior Research club, headed by Mrs. Bob Colombe, and Miss Mills and Miss Heady are being sponsored by the Auxiliary.
The candidates, all juniors in high school, were selected on the basis of their high moral characters, honesty and courage; for leadership, scholarship and cooperativeness and for physical fitness.
Miss Harris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Harris, is a member of the state and national honor society, student council representative for two terms, treasurer of FHA, cheerleader, co-captain of the girls basketball team, past officer of Future Nurses association, member of the glee club, mixed chorus, modern choir and sextet, and is a past class officer.
Rod Taylors Buy Motel in Fairview
The sale of the Don Mar motel at Fairview to Rod and Beth Taylor was announced today. The Taylors took over operation of the motel Saturday from Herb and Inez Kliewer. Sale price was not disclosed.
The motel, located in downtown Fairview has 18 units as well as living quarters for the owners. It is air-conditioned with a swimming pool and is the only motel in town, Taylor said.
The Taylors are both long time residents of this area and this is their first business venture away from Tonkawa. Taylor was formerly Chevrolet dealer here, in the television tower manufacturing business as well as interested in farming.
Mike Bolick Will Get Eagle Award
Mike Bolick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Parnell Bolick, Tuesday night will receive the coveted Eagle Scout award when a court of honor is held in the basement of the First Christian church.
Merit awards will be awarded also to Fred Taylor, Chris Lucas, Danny Sipe, David Bloss, Lynn Watson, James Icenogle, Bill Hockett, R. L. Herren and Rex Herren.
