Police Nab California Escapee
The freedom of an escapee from California authorities came to an abrupt halt in Tonkawa Tuesday morning when he was arrested by Patrolman Wayne Ingmire in an all-night cafe.
Ingmire apprehended the young man on suspicion of car theft as he sipped coffee in the Jiffy Lunch, located a mile east of Tonkawa. An automobile, stolen in Tonkawa, was found abandoned some 150 yards west of Jiffy Lunch after it had run out of gasoline.
Police Chief Jim Morgan said the car, a 1954 Ford station wagon, had been taken from in front of the home of its owner, Howard Harris, 204 N. Barnes.
Upon his arrest, the escapee told Tonkawa police he had “borrowed” the car in order to operate the heater and get warm. He gave his name at the time as Leslie Powers, 17, of Blythe, Calif.
Wednesday, the suspect admitted to Sheriff Forrest Walker in Newkirk, where he had been taken, that he escaped Orange county authorities in Santa Ana, Calif. while awaiting transportation to the state penitentiary after a conviction of burglary.
The subject also admitted his correct name was Lee Plough. Plough said be and another man made their escape together. He waived extradition to be returned to California.
I-35 Work Begins Here March 1st
Close to three quarter of a million dollars of construction work is scheduled to get underway on Kay county’s Interstate Highway 35 the first week in March, John B. Doolin, area state highway commissioner announced today.
The projects start three and a half miles south of US Highway 60 near Tonkawa and run north.
A 4-lane grading and drainage job will cost $317,703 connected with a $430,339 contract for four underpasses, each 170 feet in length, two overpasses 150 feet long, and six bridge-type culverts.
Tonkawa Students to State Honor Roll
Tonkawa members of the State Honor Society were announced today by Joe Hubbell, principal. Membership on the roll is limited to the upper 10 percent of school enrollment.
Grade averages are determined on the basis of 4.0 for A, 3.0 for B, 2.0 for C, and 1.0 for D. The grade averages listed below are those attained in the past two semesters.
