Former Tonkawan Is “Outstanding Teacher”Mrs. Richard Rence, a former Tonkawan and sixth grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School, Ponca City, has been selected as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America for 1972, according to Floyd M. Loeg principal of Jefferson.Nominated by the school principal earlier this year, Mrs. Rence was selected for this national honor on the basis of her professional achievements.Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America is an annual program honoring the man and women who have distinguished themselves by their service and leadership in the field of elementary education. These people have effectively communicated their knowledge to their students and colleagues.Mrs. Rence is an active member of OEA, NEA, ACT, PCEA, ACEI, and PTA, all professional organizations and Delta Kappa Gamma honorary educational sorority for women teachers. She was selected as Ponca City Teacher of the Year in 1971.She and her husband have three daughters. They live at 2512 Hummingbird, Ponca City.Thurman Edwards New Officer In StateN.O.C. instructor Thurman Edwards has been notified by the nominating committee of the Oklahoma Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation that he has been nominated and elected Vice-President of the Health division for the 1972-73 year. Tenure in office will take effect during the fall convention of the O.E.A., October 19-20, 1972. The OAHPHER meeting will be held on the campus of Central State University, Broncha Field House.Edwards is currently beginning his second year at Northern as Instructor of Physical Education, Health Recreation and Intramural Director. Before coming to Northern he coached football at Tahlequah High School, and taught at O.S.U. for two years while working toward requirements for a doctoral degree in Higher Education.Taylor Smyth Family Holds 24th ReunionThe 24th reunion of the Taylor Smyth family was held Sunday, Aug. 20, at Ray See Park.
