50 years ago, July 27, 1972Witter’s Trip To Europe Was Fun; Nice To Be HomeSunday was a long day for Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Witter, 1110 North Sixth. They got up at 6:00 a.m. in Amsterdam, left on KLM 747 jet liner at 1:30 p.m. and arrived home last night at 11:00 to complete a 5,000 mile trip. Due to the time change, they had been up for 23 hours straight and were ready for bed.Witter, owner of Quality Cleaners, and his wife took their two week vacation in Europe visiting their son Karlton, who is employed in Der Hague by Dutch Shell. They closed their shop Saturday night, July 8, took a Braniff jet to Chicago the following Sunday morning and left on a KLM 747 at 6:00 p.m. from Chicago, arriving non-stop at 7:25 a.m. Monday in Amsterdam. Mrs. Witter termed the 747 flight “something else” unlike any other flight she had ever taken. “It made flying in a 727 seem rough and noisy,” she said. When they arrived in Amsterdam they picked up a Volkswagon, which was included in the price of their airline tickets and drove it 3,000 kilometers during the two weeks. They visited Holland, Germany, Lechtenberg, Austria and Switzerland. The couple said they enjoyed Holland, Austria and Switzerland the most. They said the scenery was beautiful and said their travels took them close to the Russian border. Most interesting place they visited was Bertresgarten, formerly Adolph Hitler’s retreat in Austria. The Witters, their son Karlton and Witter’s sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Goddell, Chula Vista, Calif., toured the countries together in two cars. Karlton has been working in Holland for Shell nearly two years and took two weeks of his vacation to show his parents and relatives around. Two Tonkawans Will Receive OSU Degrees On FridayTwo Tonkawans will receive degrees Friday night at 7:30 at summer graduation ceremonies in Lewis Field stadium at Oklahoma State university.
