50 years ago, May 18, 2022Garten Repeats as 2A State Vaulting ChampTravis Garten, Tonkawa High senior, repeated as the state class 2A pole vaulting champion in the state meet Friday at Central State University, Edmond. His winning height was 14 foot, the same height that he won the event with a year ago as a junior.Garten attempted 14-6 three times Friday but missed. State record is 14.5. One other vaulter, Gary Bond, Duncan, the class 4A champion also vaulted 14 feet to win his event. Both had previously vaulted 14-6 during the regular track season. Garten’s 14-6 vault was made at the Enid Invitational track meet.Garten was undefeated in competition this year and last year came in second once when he broke his vaulting pole in a meet at Anthony, Kansas.Garten scored six points for the Buccaneers in the state meet which was enough for a tie for tenth place along with Comanche, Hooker and Marietta.The Buc senior is the first two-time state champion in track in many years here. He has not decided where he will continue his education but has been approached by several colleges and universities on the basis of his basketball and track ability.Colombe Memorial Scholarship Given To James CreaseyJames Charles Creasey has been named the first recipient of the Robert Bryant Colombe Memorial Scholarship Fund which was established in memory of John Strome, a close friend of the late Robert Bryant Colombe. Creasey is the son of Mrs. Juanita Creasey.Upon the death of Robert, friends and family established a $500 memorial scholarship fund. The fund will supply a yearly scholarship to some worthy Tonkawa High school senior who plans to attend NOC.He was named in honor of John Strome who was killed in Vietnam. John and Robert were close friends and it was Robert’s desire that John Strome be honored in an appropriate manner. Because of this the scholarship fund was established.Charles Nesbitt Makes Short Visit HereThe chairman of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission and a Democratic candidate for the U. S. Senate, Charles Nesbitt, stopped here for a short visit Wednesday afternoon as a part of a whirlwind four city northern Oklahoma swing. He had coffee with several of his friends at Tonkawa Grill and made a short tour of the downtown area before he had to leave for a meeting at Blackwell.
