50 years ago, March 9, 1972Covenant Players Say “Thank You”The Covenant Players, National Repertory Group, will make a return engagement to Tonkawa Thursday, March 6, but under completely different circumstances than their visit here in February. On Feb. 11, while they were en-route from Enid to Wichita, Kan., for a performance their driver lost control of their 1967 Dodge camper van on icy, slick Highway 60, six miles west of Tonkawa, during a snowstorm. The van went off the road and plunged down an embankment, landing in about two feet of ice-covered water. Three members of the group were injured, two seriously enough to be hospitalized. On this Thursday, March 9, the Players will be in Tonkawa to perform at the First Presbyterian church, as a “Thank you” for the kindness that members of the church extended to them following the accident. Rev. Betty Knott, church pastor, said church members housed cast members, gathered up personal effects scattered around the accident area, and washed and dried clothing. In appreciation for these actions, the Players are making a special trip to Tonkawa and will perform at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of the church. The public is invited to attend the performance. The Covenant Players offer “Christian Dynamics.” They use the term because they see Christianity as a dynamic force demanding the very best that is in us at all times. Their motivational drama is designed to relate Christianity to the modern world. The prime purpose of the group is to offer drama as a means of communication, and the mainstay is humor. But no area of dramatic form is left untouched, with light and heavy drama, mystery, intrigue, fantasy and science fiction all being used. The Players have been praised by many religious denominations . . . among them Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, Catholic, and Presbyterian. They were established in 1963 when the first production of the Christian Dynamics series was presented by the director, Charles M. Tanner. Some 64 presentations were made that first year, jumping to 614 the second year. Since that time the groups, of which there are more than 20 have given more than 65,000 performances, and traveled into 50 states, Europe and Canada.Kay OSU Alumni Hear Assistant Football CoachOklahoma State university’s new assistant head football coach and offensive coordinator Dave Smith will be guest speaker for the annual Kay County OSU Alumni Club meeting Thursday night. The meeting will be held in ...
