Our world seems to be filled with hatred and anger, but mostly it seems our culture has turned to focus on self. But God’s word teaches us just the opposite. One of the most importat characteristics we are to have is compassion. True compassion does not stand and offer only words in time of need. Real compassion does not only look, it sees. The eyes of compassion see the pain and suffering of the other person and have the courage not only to look, but to look for ways to help, however small those ways might be.The apostle Paul tells us, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Colossians 3:12). We often overlook a critical word from this passage: “clothe.” To clothe is to have the heart of Jesus — for He was the greatest example of compassion. Compassion is a willingness to make a difference and a commitment to love those around us— even those who are not so “lovable,” those who are not kind to us and even mistreat us.Being compassionate reminds us of what we have been blessed with and then to be thankful. The selfless act of giving to those in need is the kind of “love for one another” that causes the world to realize there is a different, deeper love available to them as well.Being compassionate is following the example of Jesus in our lives. We are urged, “Do to others as you would like them to do to you” (Luke 6:31). No one wants to be mistreated and hurt, so we are to show just the opposition in how we treat others. Compassion is the key word again. James 1:27 tells us, “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their ...
