The tradition of the Tonkawa Tribal Princess dates back to 1977. This role is a great honor which ones holds as the ambassador/representative of the tribe. Regardless of age, many tribes select those who have shown qualities in personality, dependability, leadership, independence and cultural knowledge. The chosen princess also shows strength as an academic model, athlete and in cultural linguistics.The Tonkawa Princess coronation is held the first night of the Pow-Wow. It is a highly anticipated event and many of the younger girls watch, listen and patiently await their turn.The Tonkawa Princesses are not only considered Tribal royalty, they are looked up to and admired as Tonkawa royalty as well.
